Mrs. Sheets Cafe Goes to Italy 2011-2012
This year the students learned about my trip to Italy and were encouraged to try various foods that I enjoyed on my trip. The above picture is from the Amalfi coast. The most beautiful part of our trip. They also were treated to Italian music and pictures of foods that I sampled. One of the main differences I noticed between our food culture and the Italians was that they prefer to eat fresh. Every house, cafe, restaurant or apartment had fresh herbs growing in the front, back or on their roof top so that they were available to them everyday. On the coast of Southern Italy you could always smell fresh lemons in the air. They grew up the side of the mountain and many made some portion of their living from this produce. Another difference was that they took time to enjoy their food. For the Italians food was definitely an experience, not just fuel for the body. They are a very friendly people and welcome you into their hearts and home and the best way to do this is with food...food and more food.
Below are some of the foods that the students sampled family style with their class mates: This was a 30 minute class and we had 5 volunteers plating the food with help from our kitchen staff in the preparation of the food so it could be served hot.
Proscuitto/Basil and Buffalo Mozzarella
Lemon Italian Soda
Buitoni Mushroom Ravioli
Mario Batali Sauce
Gelato several flavors
Caprese salad
Pizza Margherita (we tried Paul Neumans)
Homemade meatballs with pasta sauce (used quinea instead for a gluten free option)
